Watching Old Hollywood Movies

A review on Notting Hill

The feeling of having nothing to watch on Netflix is unexplainable. There may be over 3000 movies on Netflix, and so many recommended tv shows, yet you feel like there is nothing for you. So instead of doing something useful or even actually watching a movie – you spend hours scrolling through the home page. It is on a similar occasion where I decided to watch Notting Hill.

I’ve grown up watching tons of Hugh Grant, be it Bridget Jones Diary, Two Weeks’ Notice or even Paddington. After watching tons of old Hugh Grant interviews, I realised that I still hadn’t seen one of his most famous movies – Notting Hill. So I decided to change that!

The movie was absolutely splendid. Even though most people have watched the movie, I highly recommend a re-watch. Whether it’s the cast, the setting, the storyline or even just the English accents – Notting Hill has it all. It has literally got the king and queen of Romantic Comedies – Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant!

In a nutshell, the movie is a 90s cult classic, exhibiting the perils of fame and finding love in the most unexpected places - like the old-fashioned town of Notting Hill (England). Roger Michell (the director), does an amazing job in setting the atmosphere of the film, with the old-school bookstore, the middle-class English lofts as well as the archaic hotels.

The story revolves around Will Thacker, a divorced book store owner and Anna Scott, an American film superstar from Beverly Hills. The two meet by happenstance when Anna visits Will’s store in Notting Hill. As soon as she enters the store, Will can be seen consumed by her beauty and is unable to hide his sudden shift of feelings. Through his clumsiness, both verbally and physically, he gives away his fondness for her.

Anna Scott is unofficially America’s darling. Though a renowned and glamourous actress, she has her own set of issues – she feels completely alone. She may seem to have everything, but has no love in her life nor comfort of company. Little did she know, that an ordinary small-town man would open her eyes to all the happiness the world has to offer. At the end of the day, she is just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.

But when two worlds collide, and the news is bad and getting worse, how does an ordinary boy keep the most famous girl in the world? So, watch (or re-watch) the movie (on Netflix) of how a so very ordinary boy bumps into a girl and takes her home!
