Quaran-teen Diaries

Making the Most of Quarantine

Let’s face it – quarantine sucks. And we as teenagers aren’t supposed to have such boring lives. We’re supposed to be out with our friends, celebrating every little occasion we can. But since we are stuck at home, it only makes sense to make full use of this unusual situation. Ever since lockdown was first announced, everyone has been competing with each other to see who can utilize their time the best. Be it learning a new skill or starting a new workout routine, there has been this feeling of wanting to be the most productive out of all your peers. But is it that easy to get all your work done? Teenagers these days have a lot to balance in their daily lives, including school work, staying fit, pursuing their hobbies and keeping up with their social lives. Being 15 years old, I can assure you that it’s not easy at all. But somehow by the end of it, I do manage to get through every day. And what I’ve learnt after being stuck at home for six months is that to feel successful at the end of each day, you have to start thinking about what you truly love and enjoy doing.

I agree homework really sucks, and even though we all hate it we can’t get rid of it. But try this – plan out your day in such a way that you don’t even realize that homework is a big load on you. It’s okay to take breaks in between studies, and fill these breaks with doing things you love the most. It can be playing your favorite instrument or even going to the fridge to get a snack. The minute you sit and plan out your day, you realize that you don’t have that much work. But if you keep thinking about how “I’ll finish that chapter later”, we all know that’s never going to happen;).

Being stuck at home is the perfect opportunity to learn something new. You are never going to get this chance after you’re back in school, so might as well use this time wisely. You have no idea what kind of courses you can find on YouTube for free. On apps like Duolingo, you can learn a new language in just two weeks. So instead of re-watching your favorite sitcom for the fifth time, start reading up and find new passions and things you never knew might interest you. And always remember, it’s never too late to start.

The moment you start discovering new things and start doing things that you love; all the hard work will seem to fade away because your days will become so much happier when you are happier. As soon as you put your phone down, you will realize the things you are missing out on. And always remember, when you finish a task, treat yourself, because you deserve it for all the hard work you are doing. Stop wasting your time and start doing things that you will thank yourself for in the future. And as the saying goes, ‘You can’t win if you don’t even start’.
