Mysteries, Romances and Classics to read during the holidays

Winter Holidays are the perfect time to curl up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate and read. From the plethora of books about Holiday spirit, love and adventure, there is always something for everyone. Here are some much-recommended books -

1. My True Love Gave to Me – Twelve Holiday Stories edited by Stephanie Perkins

PerkinsThis holiday-themed anthology by twelve bestselling young adult writers is all about love, family, and the spirit of Christmas. The short stories can easily be read over twelve days or altogether. An avid reader or not, it will make you fall in love with every story you read and is bound to set the festive mood.

2. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

If you are in the mood for a classic, ‘A Christmas Carol’ is the book. This one truly catches the real meaning of Christmas. Though most of us are familiar with the story yet revisiting it through the words of Charles Dickens himself will be a good refresher. It follows the actions of the protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge after he is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past, Present and Future and warned to mend his cynical and pessimistic attitude towards Christmas.

3. 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston

A funny and family-oriented book, ‘10 Blind Dates’ is pleasant and makes for good light reading. The story follows the protagonist on 10 blind dates set up by her family members. Some of these are extremely hilarious and will keep you thoroughly engrossed. Overall, it explores the themes of self-discovery and self-love in that transition phase from high school to college. This book checks the category for a much needed feel-good book!

4. Hercule Poirot’s Christmas by Agatha Christie

If all the stories about mistletoe and cheer become boring, this exciting murder mystery is an amazing respite. After all, you can never really go wrong with Agatha Christie, the queen of mystery and crime. A gruesome murder during a dysfunctional family reunion is bound to keep you engaged with all its plot twists and shocking turns.

5. The Chaos of Standing Still by Jessica Brody

This book is about friendship and grief. While returning home for the holidays, a girl gets stranded at the airport on the eve of her best friend’s death anniversary. The story evolves with her meeting a boy and helping each other deal with their problems. It is heart-warming and an emotional read - but sometimes a good cry is what we need.
